Kähmä

The Kähmä farm is located in Kruusila, by the old road to Turku. The farm is over a century old and during its history it has housed cows, turkeys and pigs.

The family Saario has been at Kähmä for over 50 years. The story of the Kähmä garlic started when the younger brother Timo planted the first pieces of garlic just to try it out. Sceptical remarks aside, the small lot of land started sprouting a delicacy that charmed besides the farmer himself, his friends and family.

The Kähmä garlic was something entirely different from similar ones brought to Finland from the far East: its powerful, characteristic taste was born by finnish sisu (=endurance, fighting spirit) and from the serene tranquility of the countryside. The crops were small, and when the word about the finnish garlic started spreading, the Kähmä garlic was almost ripped off the farmers hands. The older brother Hannu had followed the farming process from the sidelines, and now gave his brother a helping hand, and soon lost his whole heart to farming. In the year 2010 the open company Kähmän Kaali ja Pukki was founded, and soon the company became the second largest garlic producer in Finland. Today Kähmä garlic grows on three hectares of land, and there are plans for further expansion. Slowly, steadily and with equally great love as with the first lot of garlic.
